The RL21 Firefighting Kit transforms a Komatsu forwarder into a mobile firefighting unit carrying 21,000 litres of water, including a dedicated emergency reserve. The system can be fitted or removed in less than two hours, allowing the forwarder to return to its regular work when the equipment is no longer needed.
The combination of water capacity, terrain mobility and an experienced operator makes the unit particularly useful in areas that can be difficult for conventional firefighting vehicles to reach. It can support several types of work, including early response, back-burning, blacking-out operations and the establishment of control lines.
Experience from real Operations
The equipment has already been used during several fire events in Australia. Following a lightning strike in Bondi State Forest, an RL21-equipped forwarder and a bulldozer were quickly deployed and helped contain the fire before it developed into a larger incident.
Contractor Dean Venturoni also used an RL21-equipped machine during the Walwa River Road fires. Over three weeks of operation, the machine supported firefighting work in an area that included extensive pine plantations.
According to Dean, the machine’s capabilities are not only defined by its water volume and delivery rate. Its mobility in difficult terrain and ability to move through blacked-out areas are equally important. He also highlights the role of the operator.
“Just as important is having an experienced forwarder operator who understands how to use the machine effectively,” he said.
More than a machine
The examples from Australia show how forestry machines can take on an additional role when circumstances require it. They also highlight the importance of preparation, cooperation and the ability to respond quickly when fires occur.
Access to suitable equipment is important, but the experience of the operator and effective coordination between organisations also play a key role. Together, these factors can help limit the impact of fires and support the protection of valuable forest resources.
